World Cup occurs once every four years. In my country, one needs to pay about $120 to watch the 64 matches in the entire competition. I understand that this is a free to air broadcast in some countries. I have since stopped watching the World Cup since 2006 whereby it costs about $20 plus to watch the entire competition. I do not see the need to pay the subscription in order to watch the matches. Initially, there was bound to have withdrawal symptoms. However, the feeling would eventually subside and no longer exists.
The above circumstance goes to show that it is possible to eliminate the urge if one is resilient and determined to do so. The way in which the initial free to air becoming the commercial profit-making machine by the pay TV powerhouses shows the demand requirements. When there is a demand, the parties will invent profit-making strategies to capture such markets. The viewers have no choice but to pay the hefty subscription fees imposed by the pay tv powerhouses.
I choose not to be one of such viewers as I do not think that it is worthwhile to do so.
