Recently, I had lunch with one ex-colleagues from previous job. During the conversation, she mentioned that she is in risk of being retrenched due to the perceived not up to expected performance. She highlighted that she had been working daily from 8am to 10pm from Monday to Fridays. The working hours exceeded the stipulated working hours in her organisation. She also brought her work back home and has been working over the weekends. It appears that the KPI in her organisation is very high and the timeline of completion for her assigned work is very tight. Her boss questioned her on the added value which she could add to the organisation about a year ago and this does not justify her remuneration in which she was recruited from other organisation. Her remuneration is on higher end of her current corporate rank and the boss indicated that she is expected to deliver higher and better quality work performance to justify the remuneration which the organisation currently pays her. She pondered whether this is the type of working lifestyle she want. She does not have time to do the things which are of interest to him. She also mentioned that her co-workers also work long hours as her and there are some co-workers who are diagnosed with illness like cancer, heart blockage etc. She is not sure whether the long hours of work contributed to such illness. These co-workers have been in the same organisation for many years.
The above circumstances reinforced my perception of quitting the corporate world. I no longer have the appetites of putting long hours of work in my existing work. I feel that it is not worthwhile to put in extra personal time to excel in the work. I am of view that the work quality is subject to personal views of managers. I told my friends that she has options and needs to plan for herself. She does not have to work till the official retirement which is 62 in the place which I reside.
